History
Several old coal seams run under Whitecotes Playing Field, bordered to the east by Boythorpe Colliery until it closed in 1887 and to the south by Whitecotes Colliery until that closed in 1958.
For some time Whitecotes Farm managed the land which also provided ironstone and clay.
To many local residents it was known as the 'cow field' or Foolow's Field and they remember playing there as children building straw dens much to the farmer's annoyance.
Others recall cows sticking their heads over garden fences trying to eat the plants.
We'd love to hear of any memories you have of the field!
